The First Word: Questions remain at quarterback

Posted in Uncategorized by Kyle Veazey on October 21, 2009

(To anyone stumbling across this blog: This is a test.)

Chris Relf? Tyson Lee? Anyone else?

The quarterback position at Mississippi State has been the focal point of recent weeks, given Relf’s suspension for the last two games for an unspecified violation of team rules. Coach Dan Mullen won’t say anything more on Relf, and when I asked Tuesday if there were anything to read into him taking second-team snaps during the 10-minute media viewing opportunity, he said “we’ll figure that as the week goes. All of those guys need to get reps to stay up on what’s going on.” Before anyone makes a big deal of Relf taking second-team snaps, reporters were told he did that last week, too.

The bigger point, though, is how Lee has played taking all the snaps. (Weird, huh? The two-quarterback system took such firm root that when it turned back to the old “one-quarterback system,” that seems novel.) In today’s notebook, we took a look at how Lee’s preparations are drawing praise.

WHAT THEY’RE WRITING | Red-zone efficiency is a concern for the Gators, we learn in the Gainesville Sun. … Plenty of quick items from the Orlando Sentinel. … Where is Tim Tebow on the Heisman list? … Lane Kiffin says Alabama is No. 1.

NUMBER TO NOTE | 41 — First downs this team is shy of the school record, which was set in 1982. Also, if State continues to average 390.3 yards per game, it’ll be the second highest such mark in school history.

FROM THE WAY-BACK MACHINE | In 1924, State played Florida not in Starkville or Jackson. Not in Gainesville or Orlando or Tampa or Jacksonville. The game was played in Montgomery, Ala. I have no idea why, other than it was in between both campuses. Florida won, 27-0.

SHAMELESS PLUG | My regular visit with the Morning Vent crew will take place at 7:45 a.m. That’s on AM 930. … At 8:07 a.m., I’ll be on with Chuck and Doug on AM 620. Both, of course, are in Jackson.

TODAY’S PLANNER | Florida coach Urban Meyer will be on the SEC teleconference at 10:20 a.m.; Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen will be on at 11:30 a.m. State will practice this afternoon, but it’s closed to the media and public and there will be no media opportunity afterward.

WHAT WE’RE WORKING TOWARD | No. 2 Florida (6-0, 4-0 SEC) at Mississippi State (3-4, 1-2), Saturday, 6:31 p.m. TV: ESPN Radio: MSU Network Weather: Partly cloudy, high of 55, low 44. (Link) Line: Mississippi State +23.
